Moritz Abt

Independent Management Consultant — Hamburg

Understand. Structure. Deliver.

I get up to speed on new topics quickly, bring structure to complex projects, and make sure something tangible comes out the other end. Right now I'm running two very different mandates: at a climate-tech startup, the Series A fundraise, competitive and business-model analysis, and — as an economist — a solid grasp of the mechanics behind carbon credits in both the voluntary (VCM) and compliance market (EU-ETS), plus EU-level regulation around Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement; at an insurance group, leading the PMO for the transformation of a core policy administration system with around 70 people involved — from overall program planning to new controlling structures to resolving entrenched silos.

Focus Areas

Four areas, one standard: delivery over decks.

Carbon Capture Technology

Carbon Capture Technologies and Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement

A young market with deep technical complexity and a rulebook that's still being written. I understand Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement and Enhanced Rock Weathering well enough to assess them soundly — including competitive and business-model analysis, and support through financing rounds from seed to Series A.

Note To have a real say here, you need to understand process engineering as well as the Series A pitch.

Carbon Credits

Carbon Credits

As an economist, I understand the economic logic behind carbon credits in detail: how they're created, certified, and traded — in the voluntary carbon market (VCM) as well as the EU's compliance market (EU-ETS). On top of that, I've worked intensively on EU-level regulation and studied competitors and their business models in the CDR market.

Note Economic logic over buzzwords — understanding how a market for an invisible good even comes into being.

PM / Change

Project Management

Projects rarely fail because of the idea — they fail in execution, and in getting people on board. I build overall planning frameworks for large programs, establish controlling structures and recurring communication routines, and resolve entrenched silos between teams. With proven methods, and change management above all, I keep projects on time, on budget, and anchored within the team.

Note No buzzwords — only milestones that actually get hit.

Transformation

Insurance Industry

Across four insurance groups, I've worked as Product Owner, PMO, Management Consultant, and Project Lead on transformation projects: the full decommissioning of a mainframe system in a program spanning five projects and over 30 sub-projects, the introduction of dynamic pricing for a digital insurance product, a newly built sales-controlling system with profitability checks, and a customer portal rolled out across several group entities. New technologies, modernized IT infrastructure, redesigned processes — and the change management that gets the organization to actually move with it.

Note Grown systems, long timelines, many stakeholders — patience pays off more than speed here.

An economist with a sense for structure.

Since 2024Independent management consultant

My name is Moritz Abt. I'm a trained economist (M.Sc. Economics & Public Policy) based in Hamburg. From 2016 to 2024, I worked as a manager and team lead across various management consultancies, building broad experience advising management and executive boards, and in project management and delivering complex transformation projects. One focus throughout was the insurance industry: I worked for four different insurance groups — across changing roles as Product Owner, PMO, Management Consultant, and Project Lead, including a multi-year transformation program with five projects and over 30 sub-projects, with regular participation in the C-level steering committee.

"I don't measure success by how good a slide deck looks, but by what's actually still running once I'm gone."

I've been independent since 2024. What draws me in are topics I don't yet know: eighteen months ago I knew nothing about the chemistry behind Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement — today I support a climate-tech company through funding rounds and the EU regulation shaping that field. In parallel, a major insurance-industry project with around 70 people involved. Two very different worlds that demand the same work: get up to speed, understand deeply, bring order — then deliver.

I place great value on transparent communication and a genuine partnership with my clients.
